Discovering Marche’s treasures : handmade shoes, hats and lace


Arrival to Porto Sant’Elpidio in the afternoon – Visit of the LORIBLU show-room. Founded in 1970 by Graziano Cuccù who repaired and turned an old washing machine into a defiber machine for leather. Led by the success of the Mignon model the company soon achieved an international fame.

Transfer to Sant’Elpidio a Mare, a small medieval town, nestled in the Marche rolling hills, with a historical center rich in architectural works : The Church of the Collegiata, the Church of the Misericordia and the Gerosolimitana Tower. The 28 meter high tower dates back to the 16th century and its structure is an unicum in Italy. On the facade, above the clock you can see an eight-pointed Maltese cross whereas above the door you can observe a Preromanesque origins lunette with « Christ Triumphant ». The plant represents four corner pylons forming the shape of a Greek cross. By drawing up the diagonals of the base, you can realize a virtual Maltese cross. The Shoe Museum is also very interesting to visit. It offers a private shoes collection from all over the world and the best prototypes of local stylists.

Transfer to Villa Lattanzi, a luxurious historic house with sea view, on the hill close to Marina Palmense.

Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Montappone, famous for the production of elegant handmade hats, unique in the world. – Visit of the Hat Museum that highlights the evolution of the hat company : from the straw models that are still handwoven, to the most exclusive models of the contemporaneous fashion.

Visit to Sorbatti’s factory, the most renowned hat factory that can count the British Royal Family among its clients. It’s also possible to order a unique hat based on a personal drawing that will be delivered at home.

Transfer to Fermo and typical lunch based on traditional recipes in a restaurant.

In the afternoon visit of the capital of an important brand which influenced the whole region’s history.

The visit begins from the beautiful tidy and linear Piazza del Popolo where you can admire some of the most suggestive buildings of the old town such as The Palazzo dei Priori which houses the Art Gallery and the Piceno Archaeological Museum. The Art Gallery displays works from the Medieval Era to the 19th century including works of outstanding importance such as Il Polittico of Andrea da Bologna (1369), Le Tavole of Jacobello del Fiore (1608), La Pentecoste of Giovanni Lanfranco and « l’Adorazione dei pastori » of Rubens. The Archaeological Museum displays the findings of the Pre Romana Fermo including belts, urns and jewellery of the Picena era. Finally, visit of the Roman Cisterns (also known as purification pools). They represent a unique 2.200 meter squared archaeological complex in the Marche. They are situated under Via Paccarone and partially under the former convent next to the Church of San Domenico in the area occupied by the forum of the ancient city during the classical era. The construction of the Cisterns dates back to the 1st century AD and was attributed to Cesare Ottaviano Augusto. It is an exceptional hydraulic work of art aimed at the water supply of the city and the naval equipment.

Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Ascoli Piceno, a beautiful medieval monumental city of Marche region. It is punctuated by towers and bell-towers and wrapped in the warm golden colour of the travertine which covers almost all the old town. Ascoli Piceno offers rich itineraries. You can visit the Art Gallery, the Palazzo dei Capitani and the Cathedral of Sant’Emidio. Don’t forget to stop off at the Caffè Meletti, a historical coffee bar where you can taste the Anisetta, local liquor made of aniseed and also the famous «oliva all’ascolana», pride of the local gastronomy.

Lunch in a restaurant and in the afternoon visit and tasting at Tenuta Cocci Grifoni. Its history dates back to the 1933 in a small farm when the first vineyard was planted in the hill of Messieri. The quality concept includes important values such as products traceability, environmental health, quality of grapes, maximum hygiene control and non-invasive winemaking methods.

Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight-stay.


After breakfast, departure for Offida, home of the precious bobbin lace traditionally made on the doorsteps along the alleys of the village.  There, we will visit the Lace Museum in the 19th century building of Castellotti Pagnanelli which houses the «G. Allevi» Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Popular Tradition and the Communal Pinacoteca. In the museum, you can admire modern works such as the dress worn by Noemi Campbell in London in September 1997 but also precious testimonies of centuries of patient interweaving.

Lunch in a typical restaurant in the old town and visit of the Ciù Ciù winery, producer of the Rosso Piceno, one of the most appreciated wine worldwide.

Transfer to Ripatransone known for the narrowest alley in Italy (only 43 cm from one house to another). Ripatransone is part of the National Association of Oil and Honey Cities. In the village, you can admire suggestive monuments in Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and in the squares. In the Cathedral, you can see some 17th century statues and paintings and also reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Giovanni. Finally, you will enjoy the City Hall and the 14th century Palazzo della Podestà which is one of the best preserved public buildings in Marche region, hosting Mercantini Municipal Theater since 1824. It features the typical horseshoe plan. Then, back to the origin places and end of the services.
